Mumbai, 31st January, 2025: Leadership is a journey of continuous learning, adaptation, and reflection. Every leader’s approach is shaped by a blend of personal experiences, influential ideas, and evolving perspectives. From the books that leave a lasting impact to the lessons learned from mentors and peers, each element contributes to a unique leadership style. In this article, we explore the foundational influences, career reflections, evolving definitions of success, and alternative aspirations of a DevOps leader.

Join Mr. Nayan Naidu, Head DevOps & Agile Practice,  at Altimetrik  in an engaging and interesting conversation with Mr. Marquis Fernandes, who leads the India Business at Quantic India as they uncover valuable insights that resonate across industries and leadership roles, offering inspiration for those seeking to refine their own leadership journeys.

Can you recommend a book that has significantly influenced your approach to leadership, and what key insights from that book have shaped your strategies or mind-set?

Daniel Pink’s Drive. A book that refined my way of thinking as a leader. Any team needs to understand the purpose for which they are working, which be achieved through the mastery of the skills they have and when given autonomy to work. This book has been a great influence on how I approach any area of work.

If you had the chance to start your career all over again, what would you do differently, and why?

I believe I had the luxury of learning from my seniors who taught me how to solve problems holistically than just addressing the symptoms. If I had a chance to start my career all over again, I would try and learn more from my peers and seniors, as collective learning is the best way of learning.

How has your definition of success evolved over the years, and what influenced that change?

I believe every problem comes with an opportunity. And over the years, it has proven to help bring continuous learning into my life. Hence, success is just another step after multiple failures or a collective solution of all the learnings from past failures.

If you were to start your own business, what kind of venture would it be, and what problem would it solve?

I believe in helping businesses solve their real-time problems, which most people would hesitate to take up. After all, unless we solve real-time problems, it would be mostly theoretical in the approach. A product that gets used and solves real-time problems is what I would like to work on.

If you weren’t a DevOps Leader, what other career path do you think you would have pursued and why?

DevOps is the connecting tissue for the whole development and software ecosystem to work together.  Hence, I love the work that we do. An alternative career would have been mostly in the cyber security space, which is again my other area of interest.
