Mumbai, 9th May: In the ever-evolving tapestry of technological advancement, innovation knows no bounds. From revolutionizing gas metering systems to pioneering solutions in defence technology, the journey of a technology leader is one marked by continual adaptation and ingenuity. From the frontlines of defence to the intricacies of gas metering, the realm of technology solutions spans a vast landscape of challenges and opportunities.

Join Dr. Indrajeet Chaudhary, CTO, at IGL Genesis Technologies Limited., in conversation with Mr. Marquis Fernandes, who spearheads the India Business at Quantic India, delve into the challenges and successes of designing technology-driven solutions for diverse sectors such as Defence, FM broadcast planning, Weather, Electrical Distribution, and Gas Metering. Additionally, he shares insights on his role as a mentor to tech startups, highlighting the significance of patience, focus, and self-belief in entrepreneurial endeavours.

Dr. Indrajeet is a seasoned technology leader with over two and a half decades of experience as a Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder. He has played a pivotal role in designing and implementing solutions across various sectors including Defence, FM broadcast planning, Weather, Electrical Distribution, and Gas Metering. His innovative work on Commercial Loss Reduction earned him the prestigious National Productivity Council Award for best innovation. In 2016, he co-founded a venture focusing on Meter Data Management (MDM) for smart metering, catering initially to Electrical Utilities and later tailoring solutions for Smart Gas Metering. This journey culminated in the establishment of IGL Genesis Technologies, where Dr. Indrajeet serves as the CTO, driving solution inception, design, development, technology budgeting, and team selection.

Your work has contributed to the development of products used in various sectors such as Defence, FM broadcast planning, Weather, Electrical Distribution, and Gas Metering. Can you elaborate on the challenges you faced in designing solutions for such diverse customer requirements?

Yes, I encounter challenges in defence projects and gas metering.

In defence projects, the goal is to develop technology-driven solutions that effectively address the challenges we face. This requires participation from various stakeholders and consideration of multiple factors.

Regarding gas metering, our team successfully designed and implemented prepaid metering technology for the first time in India, with IGL as our customer. This project specifically addressed challenges related to meter power management in rural areas.

The collaboration with IGL, India’s largest City Gas Distribution Company, to create IGL Genesis Technologies Ltd. is a significant milestone. What motivated this collaboration, and what impact has it had on the smart meter market in India?

The Indian Government’s “Make in India” (Aatmanirbhar Bharat) initiative has been a great motivational drive. Although many companies in India produce traditional gas meters, none have yet entered the field of smart meter manufacturing. Consequently, IGL and Genesis have decided to spearhead the establishment of a Smart Gas Manufacturing company.

Being a mentor to many tech startups is commendable. What advice or guidance do you typically offer to startups in the technology sector, based on your own experiences and expertise?

In India, the start-up ecosystem is rapidly evolving. My fundamental advice is to prioritize patience, unwavering focus, and self-confidence.

In the dynamic and competitive landscape of Indian startups, patience is crucial. Building a successful venture takes time, and setbacks are inevitable along the way. Maintaining focus amidst distractions and challenges is also essential. It’s easy to get side-tracked by various opportunities or obstacles, but staying true to your vision and goals is key to making progress.

Furthermore, belief in yourself is a foundational element of entrepreneurial success. Trust in your abilities, ideas, and capacity to overcome obstacles. Self-confidence not only drives you forward but also inspires confidence in your team and potential investors.

By emphasizing these qualities—patience, focus, and self-belief—entrepreneurs can navigate the complexities of the start-up journey more effectively, increasing their chances of sustainable growth and success in the Indian start-up ecosystem.

In 2016, you embarked on product development for Meter Data Management (MDM), a critical component in smart metering. Could you discuss the complexities involved in developing MDM solutions and tailoring them for different utilities, such as Electrical Utilities and Smart Gas Metering?

In the smart gas metering industry, Meter Data Management (MDM) is essential, similar to what is required for electrical meters.

Meter Data Management (MDM) involves the collection, storage, analysis, and management of data generated by smart gas meters. This process is crucial for optimizing gas distribution operations, enabling accurate billing based on consumption data, and supporting advanced functionalities such as remote meter reading and real-time monitoring. The role of MDM in the gas metering industry parallels its importance in electrical metering, highlighting the critical need for efficient data management to maximize the benefits of smart meter technology.

As the CTO of IGL Genesis Technologies, your role involves solution inception, design, development, technology budgeting, and team selection. How do you approach setting the tone for best practices, processes, and quality standards within your organization?

As the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), my primary role and responsibility involve developing a world-class product. This includes designing processes and establishing quality standards. I regularly gather feedback from the team to ensure continuous improvement and motivation. Additionally, I provide ongoing support and encouragement to the team to maintain high levels of productivity and innovation.

In this role, I lead the development of cutting-edge products by setting clear processes and quality benchmarks. I emphasize the importance of collaboration and feedback, fostering an environment where the team feels valued and motivated to achieve excellence. My focus is on driving innovation and maintaining high standards throughout the product development lifecycle.

Can you share any insights or lessons learned from your journey as a technology leader and entrepreneur that have been instrumental in your success?

Over my 25 years as an entrepreneur, I’ve discovered that entrepreneurship demands resilience and courage. Being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. Succeeding in this field requires substantial effort, unwavering dedication, a strong sense of determination, and self-belief. There’s no universal formula for success. Each entrepreneur must navigate their unique path and discover what strategies best suit them and their business.

Entrepreneurship is a journey marked by challenges and triumphs. It necessitates persistence in the face of adversity and a firm belief in one’s vision. It’s about constantly adapting and refining strategies based on what resonates best with your goals and circumstances. This flexibility and willingness to learn from both successes and setbacks are key to sustained growth and success in the entrepreneurial landscape.
